Boat, motor, and trailer stolen in Inverness County - Cape Breton Post

NEWTOWN, N.S. — A boat, motor and trailer with a price tag of $30,000 was reported stolen by the owner on Monday.

Inverness District RCMP say between Oct. 11-15, someone stole a 2017 Alumacraft MV1860 boat with a 70 horsepower 2017 Yamaha outboard motor, and a 2017 Easy Hauler trailer 182, grey in colour with the Nova Scotia license plate T420703. The owner had been leaving his items on an access road in Newtown during the week for 20 years and leaving the boat in the water on weekends to go fishing.

Police have checked with neighbours in the area but no one has come up with any information that has led them to an arrest, or the recovery of the stolen items.

Yamaha designers may not have known it at the time, but when they created the Exciter in 1995, they had actually built a fishing boat. It not only helps with tracking during hard turns under power but also provides off-throttle turning capability. At the dock, the keel simplifies backing up. Yamaha also provides Wake Assist to help dial in the perfect no-wake speed and a cruise control system that’s especially helpful for watersports. The Yamaha 210 FSH’s hull features 20 degrees of deadrise, which is great for slicing through choppy waters. To promote side-to-side stability and create more passenger space, its full 8-foot, 6-inch beam is carried far forward, like on a deckboat. any kind and has a leaning post with no backrest and no privacy curtain for the center console. Why we bought it

We’ve had several different kinds of boats but really liked the Yamaha 210 FSH because of its open design, huge amount of storage and jet drive system that doesn’t have props, which is safer when you have small kids. Growing up I did a lot of fishing far offshore with my dad, but we found we could catch grouper and even mahi-mahi without going out more than 20 to 30 miles. My wife and kids really like to go to the sandbar at Anclote Key and hang out with other boaters. One of our favorite trips was an overnight stay at the Holiday Inn in Indian Rocks Beach. We do most of our boating around Tarpon Springs and hit restaurants such as Frenchie’s. The open stern makes it easy to go diving, and in scallop season we head to Hernando Beach. We find the Yamaha is really seaworthy and plan to go from Miami to Bimini when the conditions are right.

What a Gold Rush-era orchard could mean for the future of food - National Geographic

Five thousand feet up in the Sierra Nevada and a half-hour’s drive from the last paved road, a clearing opens at the edge of a forest. The clearing is ringed with pine, fir, and aspen, a dense palisade that shields its contents from a rutted track that runs past its hidden gate. Inside, a meadow harbors more than 100 gnarled trees. It is early September, but the trees’ leaves are still green, and other colors peek out among them: apples crimson and scarlet, pears golden and rusty, almonds and walnuts in globes of dull olive.

That was 1970. Cantisano was whooping through the hills in a 1951 Dodge pickup with the cab cut off, taking a break from his first stab at farming; he stumbled on the orchard while looking for a swimming hole. In the 50 years since, as he grew from neophyte to an elder statesman of the organic revolution, he’s remained devoted to the grove he discovered that day. Piece by piece, talking to old-timers and reading newspaper archives, he reassembled its history. The trees were older than he imagined, the last vestige of a trading post that served the mining camps of the Gold Rush —which meant the orchard had survived, apparently untended, for more than 150 years.

Nuber (with wife Abby Shinn and daughter Amara) harvests flowers at the Felix Gillet Nursery, which he cofounded with Cantisano and Bliss in 2011. The three have collected specimens from at least 75 sites across the Sierra Nevada, and now over a hundred varieties of heirloom plants are cultivated each year at their Nevada City nursery.

Just 100 miles to the west lies the tip of California’s Central Valley, the richest agricultural land in the United States, which grows the same crops that persist at the forgotten trading post. But down on the valley floor, trees are pruned, sprayed, irrigated, fertilized. Without those measures, their productivity could not be sustained.

Back then heirlooms were rejected for what seemed like solid reasoning at the time: They ripened at intervals, making supply unpredictable, grew to odd sizes that did not fit processing equipment, and were too tender to transport across the greater distances that food began to travel as production consolidated. The hybrids that supplanted the heirlooms were more suited to large-scale production and shipping, but often at the expense of flavor and nutrition.

As we’ve come to depend on a handful of commercial varieties of fruits and vegetables, thousands of heirloom varieties have disappeared. It’s hard to know exactly how many have been lost over the past century, but a study conducted in 1983 by the Rural Advancement Foundation International gave a clue to the scope of the problem. It compared USDA listings of seed varieties sold by commercial U.S. seed houses in 1903 with those in the U.S. National Seed Storage Laboratory in 1983. The survey, which included 66 crops, found that about 93 percent of the varieties had gone extinct. More up-to date studies are needed.
