3 boats burst into flames while docked in marina in Norwell - The Boston Globe

Three boats were ravaged by flames Monday afternoon in Norwell while docked in a marina in King’s Landing, a fire official said.

About 2 p.m., one boat caught fire, spreading flames to two other boats sitting in Bulman Marine at King’s Landing, Norwell Fire Captain David Kean said. Firefighters contained the fire within 30 minutes of the call, Dean added.

No injuries were reported, but three boats were totaled, resulting in damage worth about $100,000, Dean said.

Man again caught living on boat without permission - The Daily News of Newburyport

NEWBURYPORT — A local man caught seven months ago while living on a boat stored at a Newburyport marina for the winter is again in trouble after police say he broke into another boat at the same marina earlier this month.

James F. Gavin, 61, whose last-known address was 40 Water St. in Newburyport, was summonsed to Newburyport District Court on Friday on charges of trespassing and misdemeanor breaking and entering.

Gavin was recently spotted by Windward Yacht Club’s manager while living on another boat, according to an Essex County prosecutor.

On Tuesday, Gavin was arraigned on the charges and released on personal recognizance pending his next appearance in court Nov. 29. During that time, Gavin was ordered to stay away from Windward Yacht Club on Merrimac Street.

Gavin was nearly taken into custody by two District Court officers as a county prosecutor asked that he be held on $750 cash bail. The prosecutor informed Judge Peter Doyle that Gavin had served 10 days in jail for the same offense and had a slew of court defaults and arrests on his criminal record.

But Gavin’s attorney, Janine Lapore, argued that Gavin wanted to resolve the charges against him as he appeared in court on his own after calling the clerk’s office and learning he was facing new charges.

Doyle sided with Lapore and ordered Gavin released without bail. Gavin told Doyle that he was legally living on a boat at a Salisbury marina.

In March, Gavin pleaded guilty to misdemeanor breaking and entering of a boat and trespassing. He was sentenced to 10 days in jail followed by six months probation.

Police estimated that he had lived in a boat stored there for the winter for a while before an employee spotted him. The employee was able to nail down the exact boat by following Gavin’s footprints to a 45-foot Sea Ray that had been dry-docked and shrink-wrapped to protect it through the winter.

Because the boat was mostly covered in shrink wrap, it was hard to tell that someone had been living there. A ladder brought police officers through a portion of the shrink wrap that was cut out and to a set of locked glass doors, the officers said in a report.

Through the glass doors, officers spotted Gavin hiding under a comforter in the boat’s bedroom. The boat owner was called and it took about an hour for police to remove him without damaging the vessel.

Marinas Busy Winterizing Boats - wnep.com

PALMYRA TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Lifting what's left of warmer days and tucking it away for winter, workers at the Lighthouse Harbor Marina near Hawley have been busy cleaning and wrapping up boats for the last week.

"Haul them out, bottom wash, winterize the engines, usually we do oil changes, water fuel separating filters, shrink wrap or no shrink wrap and tuck them away for the winter," said Ingrid Nolan, Lighthouse Harbor Marina.

Chris Toth is an operations manager at the marina. He says if people don't winterize their boats, it can cause a lot of damage.

"It's extremely important. We don't want anything to freeze. If it freezes, then it's a real big headache for us and the customer," said Toth.

Getting these boats ready for winter is no easy task. In fact, one boat can take up to two hours.

"It's a big process. It takes a long time, but we get through it," said Toth.

Bill Gutheir lives in New Jersey, but he brings his boat to the marina to get cleaned and wrapped for the winter.

And he's got a good reason as to why he does it.

"Well, I want to keep it running. I don't want to be stuck in the middle of the river. We live on the Delaware River so I am out a lot. It's many miles you can go without any houses on either side," said Gutheir.

Workers at the marina expect to be busy winterizing boats until at least next month.

Many of these boats will stay here until Memorial Day weekend.
