" It actually turned out to be howler monkeys, in a tree right at the lodge entrance. Even in a couple of days, we could see, based on the activities taking place on site, that our tourist dollars were furthering local development in this rather poor part of the country. First returning the way we had come, to Cariari, then to Guapiles, Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, and finally Chilamate, getting off at the school at 4 pm (after a 9 am start) and walking 300 m down a small side road. At Chilamate, next day before breakfast, we saw flocks of egrets, and Passerini tanagers, and toucans very clearly, which was one of our major quests. Sloths were the number one thing Frances wanted to see in Costa Rica, so she is pretty much ready to go home now. They come with either two or three toes, and the ones we saw were brown-throated three-toed sloths. Every time Frances pointed her camera at the toucan, it flapped to the other side of the tree, and back, and forth, as she struggled to follow it. Hence the expression, "Toucan play at that game.
